Who we are

Welcome to Sopris Elementary School!  We are a neighborhood school serving about 400 students in grades PreK-5th grade in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.  At Sopris we are preparing our diverse community of engaged learners to be ready for the world!  We believe together with our parents and community, we can teach and inspire our students to excellence. We believe all students should be engaged and challenged in their learning experiences. We value relationships, hard work, and diversity.

Our students experience a learning environment that fosters academic, social, and emotional growth.  We use restorative practices and strive to make strong personal connections with students, families and our community to create a safe, warm, and culturally respectful place for all to learn.

SES strives to provide students with authentic and meaningful learning experiences that engage and challenge them.  In addition to reading, writing, math, social studies and science, we also offer:

  • CREW time where we start / end our days with building our relationships and doing activities to develop our “habits of a scholar” (executive functioning, perseverance, enthusiasm, compassion, and teamwork).
  • Specials Class Programming:  STEM/Library, Music, Art & P.E.
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education classes for emerging bilingual students
  • Gifted & Talented program (P.E.A.K.) for qualified students
  • Special Education program for qualified students
  • Extra intervention support when students need it
  • An instructional partnership in science with Aspen Center for Environmental Science (ACES)
  • Extra before/after school activities include:  Chess Club, Bel Canto Choir, Girls on the Run, Aspen Strings, Running Club, French Club, School Newspaper

Terrific Kids
Terrific Kids

Once a month we honor our Terrific Kids. This is sponsored through our partnership with Kiwanis Club. A fifth grader is nominated by their teacher to represent one of the habits of a scholar. The child writes a short essay and presents it to parents, community members and staff.
